Reimplementing an existing system is a thankless job. Your best hope and reward is to effect no perceivable changes and receive no complaints. It's better to only mostly reimplement the existing system. Introduce enough changes that expectations are set to see the new thing as, in fact, new. Also, it's important that it helps motivationally to be working on something new amongst the old.
